Weekly News Insight: Dear Fitfluencers, Please Be True
Are fintness influencers really fitness experts?
Thanks to our beloved social media platforms, staying fit is now a well-known lifestyle. Nowadays, seeing Instagram stories of people working-out and eat “clean” might be your daily routine. People flock to the gym, take selfies with their work-out buddies, and upload it to their social media. All this helps to make the fitness lifestyle mainstream.
A substantial part of how social media promotes fitness lifestyle could be attributed to the fitfluencers (fit-influencers). As Viral Access reported, gym companies are using them to increase fame and traffic for their gyms. The campaign succeeds. People aspired by the fitfluencers signed up for the gym and started their diet.
Yet despite their attractive pictures and numerous likes, regarding all fitfluencers as trustable health gurus would be a serious mistake. Sometimes, posting compelling posts are more attractive than disseminating the truth. Other times, those fitfluencers simply lack the expertise of a professional.
And that’s why we compile three myths in the fitness sector commonly found in social media platforms to help you discern better your favorite fitfluencers! (As reported from Phillymag).
1. More Likes = More Expertise
Remember the first time you decided to embrace a healthy lifestyle? You would probably surf through Instagram searching for inspirations and methods. It turns out that those metrics we usually use to discern people on social media, namely, followers and post likes, aren’t really telling when it comes to expertise.
To attract more likes, influencers often upload the most striking poses, though not necessarily the most efficient or suitable one for an amateur.
Be sure to do further research or contact the professional before adapting any workouts. The numbers of likes and followers of those fitfluencers are simply proof of their popularity, not expertise in the fitness field.
2. A Single Most Effective Approach Applicable for All People
Some fitfluencers are perpetuating the idea that there is a single approach that will fit all people and get them the best result. This view fails to take into account the diversity of human bodies. One’s wellness journey is not a matter of copy and paste. Rather, as Adriana Akintobi, a wellbeing teacher said, it is a self-inquiry process.
The belief that one approach works for all people is evidenced by the hype surrounding certain diet methods. The Keto diet buzz is one example. Endorsed by big names such as Kim Kardashian West and Lebron James, the diet method attracted a lot of people to practice it.
However, professionals have since then spoken up the danger of the diet method for some people with diabetes background. It’s not that the diet method is bad at all. It’s just the human body is widely diverse and different methods work for different people.
3. Shortcut Yields Favourable Result
There are some bad influencers out there promising a quick result for people who buy their training method or diet products. The truth is, there is no shortcut.
Good influencers would be honest to tell their followers the strenuous process of body-building. The human body should be nurtured continuously before reaping the result. Still, good influencers would motivate and guide their followers through the process. Not telling them the other way around.
Our Take
Fitfluencers play a massive role in shaping the wellbeing lifestyle endorsed by many people today. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that every piece of advice by the fitfluencers is true.
The rule is clear: follow those good influencers who speak authentically of their experiences in the journey of wellbeing. This authenticity very well adheres with Viral Access core value in bringing authentic stories of brands to the audience.
Happy workout!
